FNIHB Provider,
I am Metis from Treaty 8 territory and MNA Region 1. I have worked within Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous communities for over 15 years. My foundation of practice is based on the belief that “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.” This applies not only to the children and adolescents I work with; it is also relevant to adults who have carried their early painful experiences into their adult lives that result in ways of coping that block happiness and health.
I combine Western psychological practices with Indigenous practices for a more holistic approach to healing and growth. These practices include Attachment therapy (psychodynamic), Person-centred therapy, play therapy, and Trauma and Neurosystems (NMT Model - Bruce Perry). Addiction treatment; Body-based therapies (critical for trauma); Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Solution-focused therapy; and Cultural training through teachings by Indigenous knowledge keepers, elders, and ceremony.

Individual therapy for teens and adults, In-person in Calgary and Virtual all over Alberta, DBT Informed Therapy, EMDR and parts work, Trauma Specialist, FNIHB provider, LGBTQA2S+ ally, BIPOC ally,Alexis is a Euro-Canadian who is an ally of the Indigenous community. She was born and raised in Alberta, only 15 minutes from Siksika Nation. This meant that growing up, many of Alexis’ friends and classmates were part of the Indigenous community. It was in 2015 and beyond after Alexis began working at Distress Centre Calgary, she became aware of the unique inequities that Indigenous people face from the past and the present. This learning and understanding were enhanced when Alexis worked with many Indigenous women and completed more Indigenous-focused training at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter from 2019 to 2022. Alexis also worked with both Indigenous men and women with criminal histories in the John Howard halfway homes from 2021 to 2022.
Alexis completed her Bachelor of Honors in Psychology with a major in Applied Psychology through Acadia University in Nova Scotia in 2015. Following graduation, Alexis moved back home to Alberta and began her career in the helping profession. Alexis completed her Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University in 2021. In 2022 Alexis received her provisional psychologist liscence and became fully registered in 2023. Since becoming fully registered, Alexis has been shifting her focus to supporting Indigenous people looking to heal from trauma and improve their overall well-being in therapy.
Alexis typically supports clients experiencing bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, trauma (PTSD/CPTSD) and ADHD. Alexis has completed formal training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and provides DBT-informed treatment as one of her specialties. Alexis teaches DBT skills to help her clients become more resilient in the face of difficult emotions. Alexis is also trained in and currently working toward full certification in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Alexis uses this therapy to help clients overcome past adverse events in their lives that still impact their emotions in the present. As a compliment to this work, Alexis has taken training and is receiving consultation in “parts work”, inspired by Robyn Shapiro’s ego state work and Richard Shwarts’ Internal Family Systems therapy. These therapies help clients heal younger parts of themselves that are still struggling in the present day.

Services Include:
Individual Counselling, Telehealth Counselling Only, Assessments, IQ Assessments, Child and Youth Therapy, FNIHB Provider,I had the rare opportunity to begin working with Indigenous individuals in 2014 in remote communities in Northern Quebec. Our goal was to understand how ancestral cultural identity is associated with academic achievement in youth and emotional well-being across the lifespan. As I completed my Master of Arts, I travelled to Alberta and continued to work with Indigenous communities; I learned that the struggles to access support and services reasonably are not limited to Indigenous individuals strictly in remote communities.
I provide counselling, strongly emphasizing flexibility and safety and maintaining a client-centered approach. My focus is to work with clients as they work to overcome their challenges and pursue their goals. As we work together, we may engage in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Self-Regulation Therapy. Most notably, it is to establish a framework that focuses on the fundamentals of counselling. Assessments and therapy are effective tools, providing cultural safety, respect, power imbalances, and rapport have been firmly addressed.
I work to remain mindful of my responsibility when working with individuals who have experienced significant challenges in accessing services and require trauma-supportive support that is culturally congruent and consistent with an individual’s ways of knowing. Regarding Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals, my secondary focus is supporting individuals with atypical developmental profiles, autism spectrum disorder, and behavioral challenges. This includes emphasizing rebuilding foundations, meeting clients where they are, and breaking down large challenges into achievable tasks. Areas of Practice: Addiction, Anxiety, ASD, Behavioral Challenges, Depression, School, Self-Esteem, Stress, Trauma-Informed Care
Qualifications and Training: McGill University - M.A. School/Applied Child Psychology – Education & Counselling Psychology, CPI - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training & Suicide Prevention, Indigenous Awareness Canada - Indigenous Awareness Training , Assessment Training: Psychoeducational assessment, Capacity Assessment, Court Assessment, Refugee Assessment, ADOS/ADIR Clinical Certificate.
